Hello Respected Team.

I am conducting a research on how the existence of Domestic Violence in households and its impact on Children's Education Outcome in Ghana using the Standard DHS data sets for 2014 and 2022. What variable(s) can be used to measure the child's education outcome? I am finding it quite difficult to fish out.

Your assistance will be highly appreciated.

Please see the following response:
To measure the child's education outcome in the DHS data sets, you can use the variable "highest educational level attended" or "highest grade attended" for children aged 6-14 years. This information can be found in the children's recode dataset. Additionally, you can use the variable "currently attending school" to determine if the child is currently enrolled in school. This information can be found in the household questionnaire dataset. For more information on how to access and use these variables, please refer to the DHS Program's github repository.

Hello after combing the data and based on your suggesting that "highest educational level attended" or "highest grade attended" for children aged 6-14 years. This information can be found in the children recode dataset.''

I realized about 730 outcomes came out as having higher education which ordinarily children between 6-14 will be in primary or secondary in Ghana.

Secondly, In the PR file I have identified education variables HV121-124 however I could not find which age category it refers to.
Lastly, in the Household files, I identified education variables HV121_01, HV122_01 among others yet I could not identify which age range it referred to.

In the same Household file, I could not find "currently attending school'' which you suggested for analyzing children education outcome.
I am really confused now. Any assistance or clarifications will really help.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I was able to open the screenshots you sent. (For some reason I was unable to open the screenshots you sent earlier.) I see that you are using the HR and KR files, and I think that's your main problem. The cases in the KR file are children under 5, and the v variables refer to the mother. The cases in the HR file are households, and the hv variables (with subscripts such as _01 and _02) refer to all people in the household. That's why you are getting what appear to be impossible combinations of age and completed schooling.

You will get a file of children age 6-14 if you open the PR file (which is a reshaped version of the HR file and has individual household members as cases) and then "keep if hv105>=6 & hv105<=14". You will then want to merge that file with the IR file, which has the DV variables, matching the children with the mothers. This means matching hv001 hv002 hv112 in the reduced PR file (the children age 6-14) with v001 v002 v003 in the IR file (the file of mothers). There can be more than one child per mother, so this is an "m:1" merge. There will be quite a few cases in both files that do not merge, for children who are not living with their mother, and for women who do not have any children age 6-14, at least not in the same household.
