I am trying to locate the self-reported marital status information for men in NFHS 1 and NFHS2. In NFHS 3 to NFHS5 self-reported marital Status information by men is available in MR file while the PR file provides the marital status information reported by the head of the household for all male members of the family. I can see that MR file is unavailable in NFHS 1 AND NFHS2.
In that case, I request your help on two of my queries-

a. Is MR file unavailable for NFHS1 AND NFHS2 because there was no male specific module in these rounds or is the information clubbed elsewhere.
b. Where can I find self-reported marital status information for the men of reproductive ages for NFHS1 AND NFHS2.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

You are right, there was not a men's survey in the NFHS-1 and -2. The data are not available because they were never collected.

The information about household members in the household survey, including marital status, was given by the household respondent, who was not necessarily the household head. In the PR file, the line number of the household respondent is given by hv003. You can find the person in the household for whom hv003=hvidx, and the relation to the head of the household is given by hv101 for that person (their sex is given by hv104). The household respondent will often NOT be the household head, and in many cases, the marital status of a man in the household survey is indeed a self-report.

Does the widowhood is self-reported in IR File in NFHS1 and NFHS2 (variable v501). How to know that whether something is self-reported or not.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

All the variables in the IR files come from the woman's questionnaire and interview. The woman is the respondent.

In the household survey (the PR file) there is also a question about the marital status of household members. The responses are given by the "household respondent", who is usually the household head or spouse of head but can be someone else. The person in the household who is the household respondent is the person for whom hv003=hvidx.

Even when the household respondent is the woman in the PR file, and she is giving a self-report of her marital status in both places, there can be discrepancies. The responses in the IR file are considered to be more accurate than those in the PR file.
