Hello, i'm currently working on a project to find out the determinants of timely hepatitis b0 (birth dose) vaccination in indonesia. I want to ask about the report of the 2017 DHS report in indonesia. in table 10.2 (vaccination by source of information), there is a percentage of hepatitis B birth dose. Moreover, in Indonesian reports there are two categories (picture of the table attached):
1. 0 days (at birth) and
2. more than 1 day after birth

I want to know how is it measured, because I don't see any special variables that ask about the time (hours) of the hepatitis b0 immunization. Does the measurement use the date of birth and immunization date stated on the immunization card? What is the standard?

The measurement of the timing of the Hepatitis B0 vaccination is indeed based on the date of birth and the immunization date stated on the immunization card. If the vaccination was given on the same day as the birth, it is categorized as '0 days (at birth)'. If the vaccination was given any day after the birth, it is categorized as 'more than 1 day after birth'. This is based on the data recorded from the immunization card during the survey. If the card was not available, the mother was asked to recall the timing of the vaccination. The standard for this measurement is based on the World Health Organization's recommendation for the Hepatitis B birth dose to be given as soon as possible after birth, preferably within 24 hours.

Thank you so much for your response! I have another question. As you said, the HB0 needs to be given at birth within 24 hours after birth. What if the baby was born at night (ex at 9pm) and was given the vaccine after 7 hour (at 4am the next day) or even after 23 hour (at 8 pm the next day), shouldn't it count as at birth/ 0 day too since it happened within 24 hour after birth?

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Good question. It is definitely intended that the interval will be the first 24 hours after birth. This applies to other outcomes, most importantly age at death, for which "day 0" should also be "within 24 hours after birth". I suspect there is some slippage, and some responses, at least, are given as "the same day", but that is not the intention. Of course, "the same day" would also be "within 24 hours"--but some of the next day would also be within 24 hours.

There is a question about time to the initiation of breastfeeding (https://www.ghspjournal.org/content/9/2/308) which is given explicitly in hours.

I also wanted to ask about how to recode the date of hepatitis b birth dose vaccination and the date of birth, to get the "at birth" and "more than 1 day after birth" in spss. Can you help me about that?

We (the DHS analysis team) do not use SPSS, but we can probably provide a response in Stata that you can translate into SPSS. Can you say specifically which survey you are using? Is there a table in the final report that you are trying to match?

Thankyou Jane and Tom. I'm using the 2017 DHS indonesia dataset and i'm trying to match table 10.2 for Hepatitis B "0 days (at birth)" and "more than 1 days after birth". Can you tell me how did you calculate the days because i can't seem to found the date of birth of the child (in days) to measure the timing of the hepatitis B0 as you said before
