I'm appending the IR recode for NFHS4 and NFHS5. However, the v024 (state) codes differ between NFHS4 and NFHS5. Has anyone run into this before? I'm using the most recent versions of the datasets published on the DHS website. Thanks!

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

You are correct--the codes assigned to the states of India were different in the NFHS-4 and -5. This will be an issue if the files are pooled. There have been several posts on the forum regarding the need to check whether the coding of variables, especially country-specific variables, is consistent when surveys are pooled. The labels in the last file in an append will over-write the earlier labels. In many countries, the coding of v024 has changed over time. I hope users have checked for this and have prepared (and carefully checked) recode commands.
