Dear forum members,
Sorry for my very primitive question, but I am new to working with DHS so I am not very familiar with it yet.

I am trying to start an analysis on Haiti at the departmental level. As far as I understand, the variable v024 or mv024 assigns the respondent to one of the administrative districts, but I cannot find a list of which variable stands for which department.

Is there such a list or where else can I get the information?

Many thanks in advance!

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

The variable hv024 (in the HR and PR files), v024 (in the IR, BR, and KR files) and mv024 (in the MR file) is generically referred to as region. In the Haiti surveys, it is the department. Here are the codes in the 2017 survey:

. label list HV024
HV024:
0 aire metropolitaine
1 rest-ouest
2 sud-est
3 nord
4 nord-est
5 artibonite
6 centre
7 sud
8 grand'anse
9 nord-ouest
10 nippes

These match with the departments given here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Departments_of_Haiti but in a different sequence.

thank you very much for your answer!

We're do I find these specific codes for every survey, because I further need them for the 2000, 2005, and 2015 survey and they used different numbers, therefore I expect to have a different distribution of codes?

Thank you very much in advance!

I also found these two "label lists" online for 2000 and 2012, which surprise me, firstly because they speak of a different allocation of departments and secondly because they also include "camps"?

Are these label lists correct and if so, where can I find the rest of them (for 2005 and 2016/17)?/Users/maxgerm/Downloads/haiti 2000 sps-2.pdf

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

In 2003, Nippe was constructed by the government of Haiti as a break out from Grand'Anse, so Nippe is not included in surveys before 2005-06. The 2012 survey includes a variable "shcamp" or "scamp" because people were still displaced at that time from the January 2010 earthquake. Otherwise, the departments are consistently identified by hv024 or v024 in all of these surveys.
