Hi,
I am currently harmonising all surveys for Senegal and I have stumbled over a few variables that I cannot find the codes for. For ethnicity, for example, I get wolof/lebou, poular, serer, mandingue, diola, bambara, and soninke but then also 10, 11, 12, and 96. I cannot find the corresponding ethnicities for these numbers in the recode manuals, the questionnaires or the recode maps. Where can I find this information?
The variables I need this information on for Sengal are:
- v131: ethnicity
- v716: occupation
- v717: occupation group
- v704a: partner's occupation
- v705: partner's occupation group
Can anybody help me with this?
Thank you and best,
Regina

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
For many surveys, not just these, the category labels for occupation and ethnicity are unavailable. "Unavailable" does not mean that DHS is keeping them in a locked filing cabinet in a basement. Unfortunately, it means that DHS does not have them.
You could contact the implementing agency in Senegal. You could also try to find the codes that are used by the census office. National surveys are usually consistent with census definitions for variables that may also appear in a census.
Other forum users may have other suggestions.
