I need a list of all the variables associated with diabetes and hypertension data analysis from BDHS 2017-18

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I assume you are asking about the variables in the recode files, not the constructed variables that are the indicators in the tables.

You can get a list of all the relevant variables with this Stata command in the PR file: " describe sb1* sb2* sb3* ". The list will include a few variables unrelated to diabetes or hypertension. Most of the relevant ones begin with sb3*.

You could have found these variables yourself with "lookfor diabetes" or "lookfor pressure".

You can find the constructed variables in the GitHub programs. Let us know if you can't locate them.

Dear Tom

On the DHS website, it says biomarkers data are (have been? will be?) collected. I have tried to locate data for Ghana (any given year) without success. Is there any data available (any year) for Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, COPD/Asthma, and/or HbA1c (Diabetes)? If so, where can I find this data? I have looked at all datasets available without success. Many thanks!

To find variables such as these you can open the PR file and (in Stata) search with a statement such as "lookfor hyper diastolic blood diabetes". I tried that for the Ghana surveys and all I could find was data from blood tests for malaria and HIV in some of the surveys, such as the Ghana MIS's.

Usually if there are tests the results will be presented in the final report, in a chapter near the end, on chronic diseases, for example. You can also search for keywords in the pdf file.

Sometimes there is a plan to include biomarkers but they are dropped before fieldwork because of cost or because of technical issues, such as not being able to find labs that can take on the required volume of work.

If you find test results in the report but cannot find the corresponding variables, let us know. The variables CAN be tricky to locate, but if there's nothing relevant in the report, you can be pretty sure that the tests were not done and there are no relevant variables in the data files.
