I am new to DHS data. I am using Swaziland DHS 2006/2007 dataset for man and women the .spss file.

I am having same difficulty in
1) finding the correct recode manual because the one that corresponds to the data set I have has different variables or some missing from the ones in the data set so I think I might be using the wrong one. The manual I'm using is DHS-V.

2) In the same Dataset for Swaziland ( male and Individual) I can not locate a variable the measures number of sexual partners in the past 12 months yet this question was asked in the women questionnaire and man questionnaire. My question is which is this variable in the data set.

Thank you.

Swaziland 2006/07 uses the DHSV recode structrues, so please use the DHS V Recode manual.

The variables for number of sexual partners during the last 12 months for the women are:
V766A: Number of men other than the husband.
V766B: Number of men including the husband.

For the men the variables are:
MV766A Number of women other than the wife the respondent had sex with in last 12 months.
MV766B Number of women the respondent had sex with including his wife in last 12 months.

Thank you very much.

First
Variable V766A/MV766A is number of sexual partners other than Wife/Husband...? My follow up question is: what about those that are not married? OR does the use of wife/husband unclude "steady sexual partner" whether married or not?

Second
I would like to limit the analysis to ONLY those who had ever had sex. In the DHS report this analysis is limited to those who have had sex in the past 12 months. pp194 & 195.

In other words, I would like to compute multiple sexual partners among those who have ever had sex.

Therefore my last question is: which variable can I use for Ever had sex?

Thank you so much.

The question on multiple sexual partners, is asked of everyone who had sex in the last twelve months.

Marriage in the DHS survey includes people either married or living with a woman/man. It is not limited to people who have a marriage contract.

There are several variables you can use for "ever had sex". One such variable is V525 <> 0 (V525 not equal 0), V525 is "Age at first intercourse", and the value 0 are those who has never had sexual intercourse.

You are encouraged to reference the DHS V Recode Manual as you do your analysis. This manual provides the information necessary to understand the datasets, and it describes each data file and the variables contained in them.

The data is very interesting, and your assistance in this forum is on-point. Thank you very much.

I would like to explore multiple sexual partners among people of 50 years and older.
Which data set contains respondents of >59 years? Does it have information on sexual practices such as multiple sexual partnerships?

Thank you in advance.

Glad to hear that you find the data interesting, and the user forum useful.

In the majority of DHS surveys eligible individuals include women of reproductive age (15-49); and men age (15-59), or in some cases men age (15-54). In some countries only women are interviewed.

There are some surveys like Benin and Bolivia, where we collected data on Men 15 - 64. Also, in Mozambique 2009, we collected data on men & women 15 -64.

Please do a Survey Search by "Respondents" and you can scroll through the list to see all surveys with the age range.
