Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

You are apparently using the HR file (RWHR81FL.dta), which has one record per household. In this file, the individual household members are identified with subscripts 01, 02, etc., for their line number within the household listing. Analysis will be easier if you use the PR file (RWPR81FL.dta), which has one record for each household member (the line number in this file is given by hvidx). In the PR file you will find hml32 and hml35, and many other variables, such as sex (hv104) and years of age (hv105), without subscripts.
