Dear All,
I need help identifying chiefdoms in the Sierra Leone dataset, especially for the PR and KR record, because I wanted to do malnutrition analysis at the chiefdom level rather than the district level since we only have a few districts in Sierra Leone.

Your help is highly appreciated!

Regards.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I don't believe chiefdom was coded in the data files. I see that it is on the cover sheets for the questionnaires, but there is no variable for it in the data files. The cluster code is given by hv001, hv004, and hv021, and district is shdist. There is a reference to 195 chiefdoms in the appendix on sampling, but the strata (given by hv022 and hv023) are the urban and rural portions of the districts. No tables in the final report refer to chiefdom. Perhaps another user can help, but if chiefdom is not already coded (with labels) in the data files, then we have no way to add it in.

Thank you very much for your excellent response towards my request. Precisely as you said, I can access region, district and clusters but have even tried to see how they do the coding so that I can do chiefdom analysis for my thesis research work which is a crucial variable. I have been having this issue with my chairman because, in the questionnaire, the chiefdom question was there but not included in the data set.

I am kindly seeking help so that I can complete my thesis analysis.

Regards,

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Chiefdom was probably included during the implementation of the survey because it helped identify the locality, but it was probably omitted from the data set because the survey was not designed to give representative estimates at that level. And it is unlikely that all of the chiefdoms were visited during data collection.

At any rate, we do not have any data files that include chiefdom. It is not possible to recover the missing codes.
