Hello. I am calculating the BMI for men for NFHS-3 - NFHS -5.
For weight and height for BMI calculation, I have used the MR data set for NFHS-3 and PR data set for NFHS-4 / NFHS-5.
Men's sample size was estimated by total number of values for hb1 (men's age), and then I checked how many values were missing for hb2 (weight) and hb3(height).

The problem is that when I use PR data set, about 10~20% of estimations seem to be missing, which is quite big compared to the 1~5% missing values for women.
Why would there be so many missing values?
Have I done something wrong when using the PR dataset?

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

There are special codes for the height and weight variables (such as 99995, I believe) that are used when someone was "supposed to be" measured but was not. There are result codes for biomarkers that indicate whether someone was not at home or refused. In general, in DHS surveys, men have higher refusal rates than women or children and are less likely to be found at home at the time of interview or measurement. You can check whether the number of men you find with valid codes for height and weight is close to the number given in the relevant tables in the final report. (Do not expect an exact match--it is difficult to get an exact match for the NFHS tables.)

I have one additional question.

For the 2015-2016 and 2019-2021 data, men's weight and height needed for BMI calculation are only in the PR data (not MR data)
When tabulating prevalence, should I use sample weight in the household dataset (hv028) or men's weight in individual records (mv005)?

If I could use variable hv028 for sample weight, could I use it together with women's sample weight (v005) in a merged file for calculating total prevalence?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

In these surveys, 1/6 of the households were selected for the subsample of men. The selected households have hv027=1, and the weight for men's data is hv028, which is slightly larger than hv005 to adjust for nonresponse. The age range for anthropometry for men in the selected households is 15-54, compared with 15-49 for women.

If you use the anthropometry for men in the PR file, then the weight would be hv028. I recommend that you give the BMI estimates separately for women and men and not try to pool them into a single number for the combined population. But if you want a single number, for the age range 15-49, you could define a weight that is equal to hv028 for men and hv005 for women.

Thank you, it has been a great help to me.

I am also trying to integrate data by district over time (NFHS-2 ~ NFHS-5). I found the district names for NFHS-4(2015-2016) and NFHS-5 (2019-2021), and know that there are no data for NFHS-3.
440 unique values were identified for the state/district of NFHS-2, but I cannot find the names of them. There was a file regarding this information in this forum (https://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&th=232 &goto=490&#msg_490), but it seems corrupt and is not opening.

Where could I find information on the names of districts? Or how could I match it with other districts in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5?

Attached are two files with the district codes for NFHS-2 (for Phase 1 and Phase 2 states). Note that NFHS surveys do not include every district in the country since the surveys are only powered to measure indicators at the state level. In addition, some of the districts that are included may have only a small number of enumeration areas.

The sampling frame for NFHS-1 was based on the 1991 Census in Assam, Delhi, and Punjab, and on the 1981 Census in the rest of the country. The third attached file has the district codes for both of those censuses. There may be some small deviations from those district codes in NFHS-1, however, but there is no list of possible deviations.

I am having the same issues with the files that are uploaded
I am using Mac, and it does not open with excel, numbers, or libreoffice

Is there a file that is compatible with the current Excel version?
