I am doing a small exercise on Nepal DHS, 2011 data. For this, I have a small problem in the 'Amount or Size of Household Landholding Variable' [SH120].

In the NDHS, the information Size of Household Landholding was collected in two units 1. Bhiga 2. Ropani but in the data they have not mentioned the unit whether it is Bhiga or Ropani. They might have converted it into any one unit or they might have converted these two units into any other units like hectares.

Please connect me with any person who can help me in this thing

Following is a response from the Deputy Chief of Data Processing, Albert Themme:

SH120 combines the Unit and Number in one variable. The first digit indicates whether it is recorded in Bigha (1) or Ropani (2).

Thus values:
101 through 150 indicates 1 through 50 Bigha
201 through 284 indicates 1 through 84 Ropani
995 indicates 95 or more Bigha/Ropani
998 indicates unknown

Dear all,

Is it safe to assume that sh123 in Nepal 06 survey data is coded a similar way to the sh120 in Nepal 2011? That is, if in the Nepal '06 data sh123 equals 101 does that indicate 1 bigha? and if sh123 equals 201 does that indicate 1 ropani?

what are the conversion factors to go from bigha to hectare and ropani to hectare?

thanks so much!

Sarah

Dear User,
Your thinking on the coding is correct. I have sent your query to the survey manager who will comment on the conversion. As soon as we have a reply we will post.
Thank you!
