Hello everyone,

I would like to aggregate Data on the Governorate level of Egypt.
In the final report it says that there are 27 governorates, however I can't find the variable that indicates in which governorate the respondent lives. I searched all the codebooks but only found the variable about regions (which is not the same, there are only 4 regions), and the variable about whether the respondent lives in a rural oder urban area.

However I would like to find the variable which says in which of the 27 governorates the respondent resides.

I would be veery grateful for any help!!

Kind regards,
Marlene

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

In the 2014 survey (EG61), the variable is shgov in the HR and PR files. It is sgov in the IR, BR, and KR files. If you can't find this variable in earlier surveys, please be specific about which survey.

Thank you very much for the tip. I was able to find the sgovern variables in both datasets (2005 and 2014).

However new questions came up.

Firstly: In the final reports it says that there are 26 and 27 governorates respectively for 2005 and 2014. The first question I have is: Why is there an additional governorate in 2014? I did not find any explanation about this new governorate.

Secondly: As mentioned, in the final reports, it says that there are 26 and 27 governorates for 2005 and 2014. However when I look at the data, it seems that there are 35 governorates in 2005 and 33 in 2014. How is that possible? When I print the table EGBR05$sgovern, it shows me 35 governorates, even tho the final report speaks of 26.

I would be very thankful for any help.

Marlene

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I checked this with the PR files. In the 2005 data (EG51), shgovern has codes 1-35, but only 26 of those numbers are used. In the 2014 data (EG61), shgov has codes 1-33, but only 25 of them are used.

The governorates are numbered within regions (hv024). If you enter "tab shgovern hv024, nolabel" in the 2005 survey, and something similar in the 2014 survey, you will see the logic of the numbering system.
