I am trying to examine respondent characteristics at the local government area (LGA) and/or locality level. The Nigeria 2013 Standard DHS includes variables for these (Shlarea and Shlocal). However, I'm having difficulty decoding the LGA variable. In Nigeria, there are 774 LGAs. Yet, the DHS data is numbered like this: 5, 15, 25, 35, and there are 5's, 15's ... in every state. Is there a key for how the DHS local government area data has been coded? And will I be able to use that key to map the DHS data to specific LGA names?

The Nigeria 2013 Standard DHS also has locality data, which is numbered from 1 to 893. However, there are more localities than this in Nigeria. So, similar to the LGA question above, is there a key for how the DHS locality data has been coded? And can I map the DHS data to specific locality names?

For all of this, I fully appreciate that the survey was not designed to be representative down to these administrative units.

For Nigeria surveys, you may use the GPS datasets in GIS software to spatially join the LGA names to the displaced GPS clusters. For additional information on the GPS displacement procedure, or how to account for it in your analysis, please refer to the two most recent reports in The DHS Program Spatial Analysis series:

Hello,
I am using the 1999 Nigeria DHS data, for which GPS data are not available. Is there a way of decoding the local goverment area variable for this survey round?

Dear MBruederle,

You are correct, GPS data are not available for the Nigeria 1999 DHS. It is not possible to decode the Local Government Area variable in the recode files because the labels have been suppressed, and the codes are not unique. Please refer to the following thread for a complete description of why the administrative 2 (usually called District) labels are not included in the recode files http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&th=70&am p;am p;start=0&S=f6973d3ddf7a7946892d11b70739bcae.

The Nigeria 1999 data files do include the "shstate" variable, which lists the state classification for each record.
