Hello,

I need to calculate the spousal age gap. In the IR file, there are 512408 married women. In the couples' file, there are only 57693 married women. How can I create the age gap variable for all 512408 women in the IR file?

Please help.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

In the IR file, the age of the husband / partner is given as v730. This variable comes from the woman. In the CR file, the age of the husband is mv012, which comes from the man and the MR file, and is probably more accurate, but is only available for a fraction of the couples because men were subsampled. You could look at the CR file and compare v730 with mv012 to see how closely they agree when both are available.

You could perhaps calculate the age difference as mv012-v012 for the women who are in the CR file and as v730-v012 for the women who are NOT in the CR file. For women without a partner, the difference would be NA.
