Hi, I know it is probably a silly question, still I do not understand how to identify those variables. So, I merged PR, IR, and CR (just keeping my variables of interest for CR and IR). I do not understand how I find for instance the mum of child x. Can someone help me?

Best,
Francesca

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Which survey are you working with? What variables for children are you using? Some are in the PR file, but most are only in the KR file.

I am working with different rounds of DHS for Rwanda, let's suppose 2010. I merged PR, IR, and CR using V001, v002, v003, sstruct, sdistr. First, I notice that if I keep the variable CASEID, I have +50k of duplicates out of 56k obs. I am trying to fix it but I do not get why I have this error (I get same obs as the PR file, which is my base, but with duplicates).

In terms of variables needed, I need some information for children like educational attainement, height, weights, sex, relationship to head, age. For women and men, I need, head of the household, age, marital status, educational attainement, ownership of land, relationship to head. What can I do?
THanks a lot for the help

Below is a general Stata program that you can use to combine, in one file, all the data for children and their parents.

It includes explanatory comments. At some point we will put a version of the program on our GitHub site. The surveys must include hv111-hv114 and b16. If the program is to be used for the India surveys, the ID codes must include state (hv024, v024, or mv024).

thanks, this is exactly what I needed. I would also need the same information but at the household level, so the rows of my dataset will be households instead of children. Is it possibile? thank you

I was able to combine information in the PR, IR, MR, and BR files, with children age 0-17 as the units of analysis, but I don't understand what you are looking for at the household level. The only file in which households are units is the HR file. This is a "wide" version of the PR file. Can you give an example of what you want to do with the proposed file?

Hi, thank you for your reply. So, for sure I'll need the merging you have given to me. Also, I have been suggested to use the household level as to match households and then to get the information I need from the previous file.
