I wanted to know if there has been any change in the wording of the "wife beating" justification question from the 2015-16 round to the 2019-21 one. I am referring to question 936 in the women's questionnaire for the 2015-16 round and it's counterpart in the men's questionnaire.

It would also be helpful to know if there have been any major changes in the questionnaires for the domestic violence module and the sections on women empowerment.

PS: I came to know that the questionnaire for the 2019-21 hasn't been released yet. However, getting this information soon is crucial for my master's thesis and would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The first five subquestion items in Question 936 in NFHS-4 and Question 932 in NFHS-5 are almost identical. The only two differences are that the second item (b) was worded "If she neglects the house or the children" in NFHS-4, but item (b) in NFHS-5 was worded "If she neglects the children". The second difference is that the fifth item (e) was worded "If she doesn't cook food properly" in NFHS-4, but item (e) in NFHS-5 was worded "If she burns the food". The last two items in NFHS-4 "If he suspects her of being unfaithful" and "If she shows disrespect for in-laws" were not included in NFHS-5 at all. Therefore, the only three items that are identical in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 are items (a), (c), and (d).

Okay, thank you. In Figure 14.4 of the NFHS - 5 India Report, however, they do report the statistics around being "unfaithful" and "disrespect" alongside the other reasons. Could you please clarify how these are computed if the questions are removed? Are they shifted to a different module?

You're in luck. There were several different versions of the NFHS-5 questionnaire when the questionnaires were being developed, but the version that was actually used in the field for NFHS-5 is identical with respect to the questions on justification for hitting and beating in both NFHS-4 and NFHS-5. The relevant question Q936 in NFHS-4 and Q943 in NFHS-5. You can ignore my earlier response.
