Hi,

I'm analyzing the Madagascar 2021 DHS VIII survey. I am wondering where I can find the list of questions asked and the response codes for my analysis in R. I am mostly curious about the survey I am working on, but would be curious about where to find the exact survey for each implementation for future research.

Following is a response from DHS staff member Tom Pullum:

If you go to the Publications tab on the DHS website, and then search, you will find a category "Final Reports". The final report on the Madagascar 2021 survey includes the questionnaires in an appendix. The pdf file is searchable and you can look for words such as "abortion" or "termination". If you have access to the data files, you can search through the variable labels with keywords. The website also includes links to the Guide to DHS Statistics and various manuals. Thanks for using DHS data.

Hi,

I looked in the report and I looked through the indicators included in the STATA data set. I am still not seeing anything other than the typical abortion questions. However, online it says that this survey includes the abortion module, i.e., if you search by characteristic and select abortion, the Madagascar survey is returned. Is there any other file where these would be? Is the survey marked as having abortion questions mistakenly?

Following is a response from DHS staff member Tom Pullum:

You are correct. This survey included a couple of general questions (Q230 and Q237) about pregnancy terminations but nothing specifically about abortions. We will correct the misleading reference on the website.

The list of characteristics on the DHS website includes abortion if abortion related questions appear in the questionnaire, such as the type of pregnancy outcome in the pregnancy history. Some countries choose to add more specific questions about abortion, but DHS does not have an Abortion Module.
