Hej all! I am aware that in the new India 2019-2021 data, there is a variable for dietary patters (eg how many times a week do you eat vegetables). I have been approved access to the data but I could not find information on this new variable in the DHS-VII recode manual. Does anyone know the survey and variable identifier that I can find this dietary pattern information? Thanks in advance!

The DHS-VII recode manual does not include the consumption patterns for women and men because the questions on adult food consumption are unique to NFHS-5. Questions WQ731 for women and MQ630 for men ask whether the respondent consumes each of nine food items daily, weekly, occasionally, or never. The food items are milk or curd, pulses of beans, dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish, chicken or meat, fried foods, and aerated drinks. There are five tables in the NFHS-5 national report that provide the results for these questions (Tables 10.25, 10.26.1, 10.26.2, 10.27.1, and 10.27.2). The adult food consumption variables are included in the NFHS-5 recode files.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Here's how I just found these variables with Stata, in two steps. Step 1: enter "lookfor veg". Stata then listed four variables, and it was clear that v414j was the relevant one. Step 2: enter "describe v414*". Stata then listed all the relevant variables for types of foods. Usually, you can quickly locate variables with a combination of "lookfor" and "describe".

Thank you for the help. I downloaded the individual dataset but it appears that V414 variable is for foods given to the child. I am looking for foods consumed by men/women. Is this available in the data?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff members, Fred Arnold and Tom Pullum:

The IR file (for women) includes variables s731a through s731i, which refer to specific types of foods and have the response categories "never, daily, weekly, occasionally". The corresponding variables in the MR file (for men) are sm630a through sm630i. Eggs are one of the types, and in Stata a statement such as "lookfor eggs" will lead you to these variables.
