Dear DHS team,

Working on my research with the Ethiopian DHS surveys I was wondering who exactly responds to the questions on the socioeconomic characteristics of children below 15 years, referring to the household questionnaire. Generally, I also would like to know how the questionnaire in conducted since it collects information of each household member. Does each member answer their own questions or is there a member who gives the information about all the others? I couldn't find clear infromation regarding this issue, which is pretty clear for the individual questionnaires but not at all (for me) in this general household questionnaire.

Following is a response from DHS staff member Tom Pullum:

The household interview is with a specific person, the "household respondent", whose line number within the household is hv003. If you open the PR file in Stata and enter "tab hv101 hv104 if hvidx==hv003" you will get the distribution of the relationship to head and the sex of the household respondent. In most surveys the household respondent is the head or spouse of head, but it can be virtually anyone in the household who is age 15+. Typically other household members will be present and they may help, but the interviewer is not supposed to direct questions to anyone other than the household respondent. Also, when the interviewer first approaches the household, she or he (usually she) does not assign or designate who will be the household respondent.
