I have been granted permission to use the DHS data for a study entitled "Domestic violence and reproductive autonomy of women in Mozambique". While I would like to use the 2015 dataset, I cannot find any observations under the variable on decision-making about contraceptives, which is one of my main variables of interest. I would appreciate your assistance or perhaps direct me to the right dataset where I can find that variable.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.

Following is a response from DHS staff member Tom Pullum:

In Stata format, these variables are in the data file MZIR71FL.dta. The names of the domestic variables begin with the letter "d". Data files in other formats are named similarly, with MZIR71.

I appreciate your response very much. I have access to the file MZIR71FL.dta and the variable names, but one of my interest variables, decision maker for contraception (V632), has "na" against it, and therefore has no observations. There are observations for this same variable in the 2011 dataset. I would like to know if the DHS survey for 2015 collected data on this variable or not.

Thank you

Instead of answering this question directly, I will just say how you (or I) would find the answer. There are two strategies. The first is to look at the questionnaire, which is in an appendix in the final report. You can search through the pdf file using keywords, or you can just read through the questionnaire, to see whether the question was asked and how it was worded. (This questionnaire is in Portuguese.) The second strategy is to open the file in Stata and use keywords, as in "lookfor decide", which will then give you a list of any variable labels that include "decide" (the variable and category labels are in English, rather than Portuguese). You can also get lists of variable labels, as in "describe v3*" or "describe d*" to get the variable names that begin with v3 (the contraception variables) or d (the domestic violence variables). You can get survey-specific variables with "describe s*". If you find a likely candidate, you can use "tab" or "summarize" or "label list" to get more detail.
