Hello, I am working on an analysis of DHS contraceptive calendar data. Nepal's 2016 contraceptive calendar data includes a country-specific discontinuation reason code ("H") and I do not know how to identify what this reason is. The DHS code that creates the reason variable ev903 from the letter codes in variable ev903a does not include H. Thank you for any guidance you're able to provide.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:
This is an excellent question! My usual recommendation is to check the questionnaire for the specific survey you are working with, which is always published in the appendix of the final report. This is the usual guide to any survey-specific questions, filters, or response codes. (Final reports can be found on the publications page of the website: https://www.dhsprogram.com/search/.)
However, when working with calendar data, there is another, very useful resource. The Contraceptive Calendar Tutorial https://www.dhsprogram.com/data/Calendar-Tutorial/index.cfm. Among the tutorial's programming (https://www.dhsprogram.com/data/Calendar-Tutorial/index.cfm)and coding resources is a Stata program named Calendar recoding.do that recodes the calendar string variables, including harmonizing any survey specific codes. (The corresponding SPSS program is at this link as well.)
This do file indicates that, in Nepal, the reason for discontinuation (vcal_2) corresponding to code H is "Husband away". This is true for the 2011 and 2016 Nepal DHS. Nepal has substantial male labor migration, at levels sufficient to influence fertility and contraceptive behavior. These are topics that The DHS Program has explored in the following publications:
FA119 (https:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-fa119-further-an alysis.cfm?cssearch=565442_1) Unmet Need for Family Planning and Fertility in Nepal: Levels, Trends, and Determinants (https:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-fa119-further-an alysis.cfm?cssearch=565442_1)
