Dear DHS Program

I am working on female genital mutilation in Nigeria using the Nigeria DHS 2018 data set (NGBR7AFL.DTA).

I encountered problems when key variables on types of circumcision performed on daughters returned "no observations".

The variables in this category are listed as follows:

g110 (flesh removed from genital area of daughter?)
g111 (genital area of daughter just nicked without removing flesh?)
g112 (genital area of daughter sewn closed:
g116 (intends to have daughter circumcised in the future?

I also encountered the same problem of "no observations" for variables on respondents' perceived benefits of female circumcision. The variables and their descriptions are as listed below:

RESPONDENTS PERCEIVED BENEFITS OF FGM (Variables returning "no observations"):
g117a (cleanliness/hygiene female circumcision benefit.
g117b (social acceptance of female circumcision benefit)
g117c (better marriage prospects)
g117d (virginity/prevents premarital sex)
g117e (greater sexual pleasure for male)
g117f (religious approval)
g117g, g117h, g117i, g117j, g117x (female circumcision benefits)
g117y (no female circumcision benefit)

I need clarifications on where and how I can access these data, please.

Thank you for your quick response.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

There is a more recent version of this data file, NGBR7BFL.dta. It should make no difference, but there must have been some minor corrections to 7A. If you open the file with Stata and then enter "describe g" you will get a list of all the FGM variables. The labels for g109 through g117 begin with "na", for Not Applicable. The questions that produced those variables were not asked in this survey. Decisions about including a module, and then about selecting questions for the module, are made by the country, not by DHS. We cannot give you access to the data because the data were not collected.

Dear Janet

I deeply appreciate your prompt response to my enquiry.

I will go ahead with the project, but I will have to collect supplementary qualitative data in line with the module that was not administered as you said. I am just wondering how relevant that will be given the time difference.

Thanks so much.
