Hi,

I am looking at reason for non-use of contraception among individuals with unmet need in India. My understanding is that the base of the variable for individuals reporting a reason for non-use (v3a08a-z) is individuals that report having sex in the last 12 months (from v527). There are 699,686 rows of data in the India woman's survey data. 139,773 report a reason for non-use of contraception. However, 122,686 (87.8%) have NA or 0 for frequency of sex in the last 12 months with their last 3 partners (v853a-c). My understanding though, is that for the base of v3a08a-z, they would need a value greater than 0 for v853a-c. Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Blake

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:

According to the questionnaire for the NFHS-4, the base for the question on reasons for not using contraception (Q610 or v3a08a-z) excludes the following women:

• Women who are never married (v502==0)
• Women who are currently using a contraceptive method (v312>0) or are sterilized/have had a hysterectomy (s321a==1 | s250==1 | v312==6)
• Women who are currently pregnant (v213==1)
• Women who want a child within 2 years or is undecided/unsure of the timing or report they cannot get pregnant on Q605-606 (v605==1 | v605==3 | v605==7

I hope this helps!

Hi Bridgette,

This is incredibly helpful, though I'm not sure that it quite answers my question (though maybe it does and I'm missing something).

My question is this: my understanding is that individuals who report a reason for contraceptive non-use (v3a08a-z) are individuals who have had sex in the last 12 months (v853a-c > 0). However, of the 139,773 individuals that report a reason for contraceptive non-use in India, only 12.2% report how many times they had sex in the last 12 months. It does not seem to be related to age of the respondent or marital status, so I'm not sure how to interpret the lack of data for the question about frequency of sex.

Thanks,

Blake

Following is another response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:

No, those reporting a reason for contraceptive non-use is not restricted to individuals who have had sex in the last 12 months. It only excludes those listed in my previous answer.

I see, this survey was conducted during DHS VII but uses the DHS VI recode manual where there isn't as much of a restriction on the base. Thanks!
