I am pretty new at analysing ASFR and have used standardised packages such as TFR2 from Stata and DHS.rates in R to replicate results that was obtained in the Ghana Maternal Health Survey report. The results that i obtain are inconsistent with what is contained in the report. For example

Results from report by residence
Agegrp Urban Rural Total
15-19 57 95 75

Results Obtained
Agrp. Urban Rural Total
15-19 28 37 32

I hope to have the support to help me figure out why I am not having consistent results. Thank you in advance.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The Ghana Maternal Health Surveys in 2007 and 2017 were special surveys, not standard DHS surveys, and they do not have standard birth histories and IR recode files. There must have been some special procedures to estimate the fertility rates for the reports.

Ghana has had many standard DHS surveys, and you can get the fertility rates for them using TFR2 or DHS.rates or our GitHub programs (https://github.com/DHSProgram).

Hello Bridgette

I have spent sometime going through your suggestions of using the options of DHS.rates and tfr2 packages in R and stata. My estimates still does not confirm the results in report. I also did follow up on the do files from github and applied the datasets without much progress. I will be indeed grateful to have the special procedures and guidance to estimate the fertility rates and any additional data that was utilised for my purpose. Could you please help with a contact or a meeting on this issue. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Following is another response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The purpose of the Maternal Health Surveys in Ghana was to assess maternal health. The calculation of fertility rates was incidental and probably should not have been done at all, because the standard DHS's in Ghana provide a complete and consistent sequence of estimates. We cannot help you. We recommend that you rely exclusively on the estimates from the standard DHS surveys.
