Hi All,
I am trying to analyze the risk factors for abortion in the preceding the SADHS (2016). I understand V228 is the variable for pregnancy end in miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth. But How can I truncate the abortion ? The calendar of questionnary precise that abortion is representated by "A", stillbirt by "S" and miscarrage by "C", but the variable VCAl in data generalize pregnancy terminations by "T". Please guide me in this regard. Sorry for my writing in english, i speak french.
kind regards,

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
In this survey, abortions can only be identified with the letter "A" in vcal_3. The other terminations are C for miscarriage and S for stillbirth. In vcal_1, the letter T is used for all three types of terminations (other than B for births) and in vcal_3, a T is replaced by C or A or S. There is no variable outside the calendar that gives (for example) the number of abortions.
I only find 32 appearances of the letter A in vcal_3, for the past 5 years and for 8,614 women. (There are 293 C's and 38 S's.) I suspect there is under-reporting, but in any case you do not have enough cases to be able to get at risk factors.
