Hello,
I am looking at variable HV237 in the 2013 DHS6 done in the Dominican Republic. Specifically, this variable:
HV237 Anything done to water to make safe to drink?
0 No
1 Yes
8 Don't know
(m) 9 Missing
(na) Not applicable
In the subset of the data I'm looking at I have many NA's. Would this indicate that nothing is done to make the water safe to drink (so effectively the same as no)? Or, would it indicate there is no need to treat water for these individuals (while yes would indicate there is a need and water is treated, and no would indicate there is a need but water is not treated)?
Please help me understand if possible. Thank you!

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
In standard DHS coding, NA (a dot in Stata) would mean that the question was not asked for this household. It may be that their source of drinking water was already in a "safe" category. It you look for this question in the questionnaire, which is in an appendix for the final report, I am sure you will find a skip based on a previous question.
