I am using the 2012 and 2017 Jordan DHS and need to identify enumeration areas that are in camps for Syrian refugees.

In the 2012 DHS there is a variable to indicate camps, e.g., the variable "scamps" in the BR file. From the documentation I understand that the 2017 DHS had two strata that were specific to camps. But these strata do not seem to be identified in v023 or elsewhere, and there is no "scamp" variable. I am also unsure if those are the only enumeration areas in camps or if there might be others outside of these two strata.

Could you kindly provide guidance on how to identify EAs that are in refugee camps, in the 2017 Jordan DHS?

Many thanks.

Following is a response from DHS Lead Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

We do not have an identifier for Syrian camps in the 2017-18 Jordan DHS data, but have a nationality variable (S123) which identifies Jordanian, Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi nationalities. The people living in Camps from the last two Jordan DHS's are not comparable. In the 2012 DHS, there is an identifier for Camps, but it is for "Palestinian camps", as is stated in the final report (Appendix A).
