Hi,

I would like to use the wealth index variable in the Kenya DHS. It is claimed that the Wealth Index is available from 1993 to 2014 as variable v190 (or v191) in women's datasets and hv270 in household datasets.

However, for the Kenya DHS the wealth index is missing for the above years. It is not included in the recode manuals and not in the dataset either.

Could you please help me how I could find the wealth index for all these years?

Thanks

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

I just checked. The wealth index IS in all Kenya surveys in that interval, including the 2015 MIS. For the 1998 survey (and in general for surveys conducted before about 2000) you need to merge the wealth index from a special "WI" file (KEWI31FL.dta). For the older surveys the wealth index was calculated retroactively after the standard recode files were released. You can merge with any of the recode files using the household ID code.
