Hi there,
Please can you detail how urban/rural households are classified in the 2018 Zambian household survey (I'm using the household member recode ZMHR71FL). When I look at the questionnaire that was administered there is no question for rural/urban location which would then correspond with the variable hv025 in the recode file. Therefore, in the recode file, if a household is in a rural area, is this based on the classification of the wards or enumeration areas as rural?
Also, how are rural and urban areas defined (and where would peri-urban areas fall in this binary classification)? Does the DHS have a specific definition for rural/urban areas?
As far as I can see there are no details provided in the Final Report for the Zambian DHS.
Many thanks in advance for your help!

Following is a response from DHS Senior Sampling Specialist, Mahmoud Elkasabi:
In all DHS surveys, the official urban/rural definition of Enumeration Areas (EAs) is adopted. This variable is available in the census frame on the level of EAs, where each EA is identified as urban or rural. Such information is not collected during the survey fieldwork.
