Dear Sir,
I have a question. What is the dependent variable used to analyze maternal mortality in The Gambia? How do I calculate maternal mortality rate for the in using GDHS 2013?

Pregnancy-related and maternal mortality rates are the ratio of pregnancy-related deaths or maternal deaths to the women-years of exposure for women aged 1549 years. To calculate this, you'll need the IR file.
For maternal moratility rates:
NUMERATOR: the number of female siblings of respondents who died during pregnancy, delivery or within 42 days of delivery (mm1 = 2 & mm2 = 0 & mm9 in 2:6 & mm12 in 100:141,198,199), excluding due to accidents or violence (mm16 ≠ 1 & mm16 ≠ 2), in the period 0-6 years prior to the interview by five-year age group at time of death
DENOMINATOR: Number of years of exposure of female siblings of respondents during the period 0-6 years prior to the survey by five-year age group
Mortality indicators are quite difficult to construct, visit our GitHub code library where you can find free Stata code to create mortality rates. When you visit this site - first click on the 'Readme.md' to learn how to use the site. Then you can navigate to Chapter 16 "AM" to see code for adult and maternal mortality rates:

Visit the Guide to DHS Statistics for in-depth description of this indicator:
