Dear DHS Programmers
There 37 States in Nigeria, including Abuja FCT.
In the NDHS 2018 data set I downloaded, the 37 states are recoded into 6 geopolitical zones (North East, North West, North Central, South East, South South and South West). These carry recoded name "region". There are about 6 STATES in each zone.
My analysis requires that I investigate individual STATE peculiarities within the 6 geopolitical zones, but the data set does not have the STATES in unrecoded format.
What is available unrecoded is "region of previous residence" which lists all the 37 STATES. But I cannot use this variable because its not the same with "state of current residence" as captured in the IDENTIFICATION SECTIONS" of all questionnaires used.
I need to get the 37 STATE level variable included in the data set. What do I do to get it?
Thank you.

Following is a response from DHS Data Processing Specialist, Hanna Useem:
In the questionnaire, we do not ask their "state of current residence". What I suggest using is the state variables. The state variables are at the household level: SHSTATE , the woman's level: SSTATE , the man's level: SMSTATE
