Hello,

I am writing to ask about the sample weighting and survey design for the ANC observational and exit interview data for Kenya (2010), Tanzania (2014-2015) and Malawi (2013-2014).

For the Kenyan data, I believe the PSU is facility and the strata is a cross between region and facility type. Thus, I am wondering if the order to set the SVY command, the correct code is:

egen strata=group(c001 c007)
svyset [pw=wgt], psu (c004) strata(strata) singleunit(centered)

I was also wondering if the PSU and strata are the same for Tanzania and Malawi.

Following is a response from DHS Lead Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

For all the SPA surveys conducted within the DHS Program, you can treat the health facility as cluster or PSU for providers and clients, so is the case for the ANC clients. The stratification is systematically region cross facility type. Some SPA surveys may have used a more detailed stratification, region cross facility type and management authority for some type of health facilities. But using region cross facility type will be enough for your analysis.

As for the survey settings in Stata, I am not a Stata user, but if you identify the PSU, Strata and the Weight variables correctly, I think you should know how to edit the survey settings commands.
