Dear DHS Teams,

I would like to perform analysis using DHS data from Senegal from 2005 to 2017 to observe evolution of facility based deliveries at a regional level.
My question is about continuous DHS from 2012-2013 to 2017. I did some research on your forum and I saw that the 2013-2014 survey was based on the 2002 census and the 2015-2016 surveys were based on the 2013 census. If I want to observe changes over time at a regional level, do I need to combine the data for 2013 and 2014, 2015 and 2016? Can I compare these surveys as independent surveys?

Many thanks in advance for your response.

Following is a response from DHS Lead Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

Regarding the sampling frame used for the Senegal continuous DHS, the 2013-2014 surveys were based on 2002 census, the 2015-2016 surveys were based on 2013 census, while the 2017 was based on 2013 census but with revised urban-rural. The different versions of the sampling frame differ mainly on urban-rural difference, there were no changes on the definition of regions. So if your comparison is aimed at regional level, there is no concern. But the urban-rural level comparison may have less meaning because of the change in the urban-rural definition.

The surveys are not all independent. The 2013 and 2014 samples are associated, the 2015 and 2016 samples are associated. The 2017 survey was standalone. We have published combined data for the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016, it is better that you use the combined data because the weight variables are already properly calculated in the combined data. However, when you combine the 2013-2014 with 2015-2016 and 2017, you need to pay attention to properly de-normalize the weight.

Many thanks for your response.
Just another question: is the 2018 DHS continuous survey independent?

Many thanks in advance.

Following is another response from DHS Lead Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

As for the 2018 survey, it is not an independent survey, it is associated with the 2019 survey. The Senegal continuous DHS draws an independent sample every two years, but the data collection is conducted in two years. Each year it collects 50% of the sample. The only exception is the 2017 survey which was standalone.

Dear DHS team
Further clarifications, please. Following up on the previous reply on this thread. As the 2018 data for Senegal is associated with the 2019, Could you kindly clarify if I can conveniently use the 2019 dataset alone for a comparison analysis ?
Thanks
Michael

Following is another response from DHS Lead Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

As for the 2019 data alone, it was not designed to be representative at each of the 14 regions level. Therefore, analysis using the single year data at regional level is not recommended.
