The USAID team suggests including a maternal health optional module, which could be combined with the newborn optional module suggested by the Newborn Indicators Technical Working Group. Suggestions for questions would include: 1) other tests during ANC (HIV, TB, syphilis, etc.); 2) counseling on danger signs and where to seek care during ANC ; 3) birth planning during pregnancy; 4) barriers and facilitators to giving birth in a facility; 5) ACS for premature labor; 6) antibiotics for premature rupture; 7) care seeking for maternal/newborn complications including decision making (questions could be adapted from the BMMS); 8) travel time to facilities; 9) types of insurance available for pregnancy/delivery/postpartum care; 10) how women/families paid for care; 11) cost of care; and 12) more detailed questions on referral.

If a pregnancy history module is tested and adapted, we may want to also consider including a larger sample of women in this maternal health module, beyond those with a live birth.

We look forward to discussing the feasibility of this optional module with the DHS team.
