Hello,
How does the DHS categorize "apprenticeships" for HV106 (Highest educational level attained) in South Africa?
How could I find this information for other countries (apart from posting on this forum)?
Best,
Constance

For the education variables, the term "educational institution" generally means formal schooling, which includes preschool, primary, secondary, and post-secondary schooling, and any other intermediate levels of schooling in the formal school system. It does include technical or vocational training beyond the primary school level, such as long-term courses in mechanics or secretarial work. However, it is unlikely that apprenticeships would be considered as schooling as these tend to be considered as work rather than formal schooling. However, the categorization of apprenticeships would depend on how the respondent answered the questions about education, but in the majority of cases I would not expect apprenticeships to be captured in the education variables. The same is likely to be true in most countries.
