Hello,

I am attempting to generate a subset of the individual recode dataset (Egypt 2008), isolating the section concerning reasons for abstaining from contraceptive use, particularly women who mention a religious prohibition. When I browse the data for that question (v3a08l) the values in the column are "." or "no" or "religiou". I have checked the recode manual, but do not understand what "no" and "religiou" mean. Does "no" mean that they do not use birth control because of the prohibition, for instance? I would appreciate if someone could explain it to me, thank you!

The short answers:
1.) "No" means that whatever reason is under consideration, the woman did not report it as a reason she was not using contraception at the time of interview
2.) "Religous" means that the reason under consideration WAS reported as a reason for not using contraception

When in doubt about what you are seeing in the data, for example if you have many missing values or ambiguous answers, check the final report for Egypt 2008 in addition to the recode manual to look at skip patterns, local variables, and so on. Reasons for not using FP is question 408 in the women's questionnnaire and are asked only for non-users.
