I'm analysing DHS data on prevalence of anemia and associated factors at regional level based on DHS data.so is there a need to extract all variables from the DHS data set? or can I recode there at the data set and analysing it using either do file or command window?

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

You do need to open the data files, but then you can construct working files with just the variables you want to include in the analysis. The main anemia variables are hc57, ha57, and hb57, in the PR file. They also appear in the IR, KR, BR, and MR files with similar names. Methodological Report 18 (https://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/MR18/MR18.pdf) will help you select the right variables.
