Household health expenditure information is essential for informing effective health policy and thus needs to be integrated in surveys.
We recommend that in each major population based surveys (incl. DHS), Health Expenditure (short version of the module) is addressed through the following questions:
1. Did you (or any member of the household) get medical care in the past four weeks? (yes/no/don't know)
2. For what reason? (multiple answers - DHS classification)
3. Which services were used? (Public / NGO or FBOs / private for profit / traditional healers / others)
4. How much did you spend? ($, incl. transport and related costs)

This information linked to HIV testing (if this is included) in the DHS will allow us to estimate the out of pocket spending for HIV+ people.
We also recommend to share the DHS calendar with the UNAIDS/HQ so that we can liaise with our Regional Support Team and Countries Offices to make sure that the health expenditure module is include into the DHS.
