This request is submitted by the Animating Children's Views project, University of Minnesota.
We propose a new methodology for soliciting the views of older children in survey research, without increasing risk for young respondents.
This methodology is compatible with any data collection using tablet computers.
Researchers would benefit from knowing the perspectives of a younger population, because children ages 12-17 are developing strategies for tackling big challenges that often face them in young adulthood. Even if DHS is not interested in expanding data collection to those under age 15, this methodology could still be valuable in learning about adolescents and young adults.
For example, DHS has collected some views of adults on violence, yet in households with family violence, young people are at least observers and often at the receiving end of violence themselves.
The methodology that we propose could be used on the topics of, for example,
Family planning and sexual and reproductive health
Gender and women's empowerment
Water, sanitation and hygiene
In addition, this methodology could be added to the modules on, for example,
Female genital cutting
Domestic violence
Health care
Accident and injury
An attachment briefly describes the methodology and provides contact information. We use videos (sometimes animated) with local language voiceovers; these could be produced to be comparable across countries.
