DHS provides valuable data on the educational status of children and adults. Key education indicators generated by DHS data include educational attainment, net/gross attendance rates and literacy rates. Another important indicator which DHS could produce is flow rates (dropout, repetition, survival rates etc.). In order to compute flow rates, however, data on children's school attendance in the previous school year needs to be collected. This question used to be available in the DHS questionnaires. Survival rate to the last grade of primary education is one of the two MDG 2 core indicators and important to monitor at both country and global levels. It is therefore suggested the following questions be added to the questionnaire:

During the previous school year, did (name) attend school or preschool at any time?

During that previous school year, which level and grade did (name) attend?
