The Titchfield City Group on Age and Age disaggregated data was formally endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Committee in 2018 to improve data globally on older people. More than 40 countries have joined. The world's population is ageing and there are more people aged over 50 than ever before. It is essential that older people are included in national data collections, particularly those that measure health, social issues and economic topics. These data collections can then be used to measure progress towards Sustainable Development Goals, particularly ensuring that no one is left behind.
The DHS will provide a valuable data source if it was expanded to include people aged 50 and over. While we recognise that some of the survey questions are relevant to older people, the majority of sections are relevant to people aged 50 and over and suitable routing could accommodate this.
We support HelpAge's recommendations that the following sections are expanded to older ages.
Women's survey:
Respondent's background
Reproduction (some questions)
Marriage and sexual activity
Husband's background and woman's work
HIV
Other health issues
NCDs
Domestic violence
Men's survey:
Respondent's background
Reproduction (some questions)
Marriage and sexual activity
Employment and gender roles
HIV
Other health issues
NCDs
