Household water insecurity worsens an array of vulnerabilities in both children and adults -- economic, health, sanitation, dietary, etc. The current "water source" questions in the HH module do not well capture household water insecurity status. We propose exchanging HH Q. 106 [water from this source not available for at least one full day] with a new single question that provides a better indicator of household water insecurity status. This greatly expands the utility of all DHS datasets for a) testing for the role of household water in shaping varied health and economic outcomes (e.g., diarrheal disease risk, as one of many examples), b) for water interventions as a leverage point in intervention designs (e.g., in food insecurity or sanitation interventions), and c) in tracking household-level shifts and variation in water-related risks across space and time in terms of both quality and quantity (currently no such datasets exist).
