Dear Moderators,

I am using NFHS4 India, looking at acute respiratory symptoms. If this survey uses questionnaire recode VI for ARI, should I use the old definition, which includes cough, i. e:

ari=1 if h31==2 & (h31b = 1 & h31c==3/1)

Or should I use the new one, without cough?

ari=1 if H31B == 1 & (H31C ==1 | H31C == 3)

I wonder it that matter considering how the survey was applied.
Thanks

The NFHS-4 report (Table 9.7) defines symptoms of ARI in footnote 1 as follows:
"Symptoms of ARI include cough accompanied by short, rapid breathing which is chest related and/or difficult breathing which is chest related." If you want to be consistent with the report, I suggest using that definition.
