Dear Liz,

Thank you so much for your information. However, the information that I require can't be included in one year of data set.
So, I requested new data set since 10 Dec and I haven't receive any approval email from DHS until now.
May I know how can I try to get my required data set (Zambia- Survey, HIV and SPA data sets).

Thanks in advance.

Dear DHS team,

I am working on a project on menarche in LMICs. I have requested access to all of the datasets listed in the Excel file posted here 9th Dec 2016. Please advise whether there are any other more recent datasets that also contain age at first period so that I can request access to these too.

Many thanks,

Laura

Hi! For Sri Lanka we only gave very limited technical assistance and if fact are not distributing that data. The implementing agency was The World Bank. I meant to delete that entry.

Dear DHS support,

One of the datasets listed in the Excel file provided 13th August 2018, Indonesia 2012, doesn't have the listed menarche variable. The related DHS report confirms that the question was asked to women (13. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ABOUT HUMAN REPRODUCTION SYSTEM Q1305 How old were you when you had your first menstruation?) but I cannot find a corresponding variable in any of the data files and it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Individual Recode Documentation either.

Please can you clarify whether age at first period is available for this survey, and if so, how to access it.

Many thanks,

Laura

Hi,

Just to add to this it appears that Indonesia 2007 has the same issue. The question appears in the survey documentation in the appendix (2. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ABOUT HUMAN REPRODUCTION SYSTEM Q205 How old were you when you had your first menstruation?), but the variable is not in any of the data files.

Could I be right in thinking that the menarche question only appears in the "Special" dataset for 2012 and 2007 and not in the Standard DHS datasets for the same years? I have already found the menarche variable in the 2012 Special dataset so I am thinking this might be the case.

Thanks,

Laura

Following is a response from DHS Senior Data Processing Specialist, Albert Themme:

As you already figured out the variables pertaining to never married women 15-24 years old are not recoded into the regular woman's recode, but are included in the "Special" Young adult data file (IDOD6*.*).

IDYA6C*.* CSPro Adolescent Reproductive Health Dataset - Household, Women & Men
IDYH6C*.* Exported Adolescent Reproductive Health Dataset - Household
IDYW6C*.* Exported Adolescent Reproductive Health Dataset - Women
IDYM6C*.* Exported Adolescent Reproductive Health Dataset - Men

As mentioned in IDOD6C.DOC found within the IDOD*.ZIP files(see above), this data file contains a household file, a men's file that retains the variable names as used in the "Never-Married men's questionnaire" (AY101H, AY101M, etc.) and a women's file where the variable names from the women's questionnaire have been recoded to match the men's file. E.g. AY201 = Q1301, AY202 = Q1302, AY204 = Q1304, AY205 = Q1305, etc. This way the files can be easily merged.

Hopefully, this clears the confusion.

Hi again Liz,

Do you know when the Turkey 2013 DHS dataset included on the menarche list will become available?

Many thanks,

Laura

Dear DHS,

would it be possible to obtain the most up to date excel file with the DHSs that include the information about the age at menarche?

Thank you!

Is there a more up-to-date age at menarche Excel sheet since 2018? Thanks.

Dear Liz,

I see from this list that the Rwanda 2020 , and the Senegal 2018, 2019 DHS appear to have asked questions on age at menarche. However, I cannot locate them either in the survey questionnaire nor in the datasets. Could you confirm the questions were asked and, if so, which variables report responses in the datasets?

Finally, would it be possible to know if there are other ongoing surveys asking age at menarche questions?

Thank you in advance!

A good resource for researching a question/variable is the IPUMS-DHS site, which allows users to do a web-based search on a string or variable. Variable names in IPUMS include links that provide extensive information, including variable description, cautionary notes, the survey text used to generate each variable, including its codes and frequencies, variable meaning and universe (who was asked the question), and precise question wording.

You should also check the questionnaires to see if the question was asked in the surveys of interest. The questionnaires can be found in the appendix of the final reports. The question "How old were you at the time you experienced your first menstruation?" is a country specific question, and is not asked in all surveys. If you cannot find the variable in the dataset or in the questionnaires, then the information was not collected.

Dear Bridgette,
I'd like to ask about v249 variable on "age at first menstrual period" in 2022 Kenya DHS. It seems to be missing on ~50% of the sample, and I noticed that the missing cases are those for which variable v447 on "results of measurement - height/weight" is equal to "no measurement found in household". Does it mean that age at first period was collected only among women who were chose for anthropomorphic data collection? If that is the case, could you advise how to use this data? Are there any special weights to make sure that, when doing analysis, results are nationally representative?
Thank you,
Ewa

Following is a response from Senior DHS Staff Member, Tom Pullum:

Yes, you are correct. In the PR file, look at hv027 and shshort (a duplicate of hv027). This survey was designed to have a subsample of households in which men were not interviewed and some topics were omitted. This selection was done at random, so all estimates are unbiased. You do not need to modify the weights.

There is some discussion of this in the report and in the appendix on sampling.

Many DHS surveys involve some kind of subsampling in order to cover a wide range of topics while keeping down the costs of data collection and the length of the interview, which is a burden for respondents.
