Hello team,

I would like to know more about the child development variables in the latest DHS data.

1. What assessment tool was used?
2. Which countries have data on child development?
3. What questions were asked?
4. Where in the recode manual can we find more information about those variables?

Thank you very much for your help.

Regards,

Hasina Rakotomanana

Dear User, Can you please be more specific? Unless you have a specific variable in mind, you can start by looking at our standard questionnaires to see the types of questions typically asked in a DHS survey before posting your query. https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSQ7-DHS-Questionna ires-and-Manuals.cfm
Thank you!

Hello Liz,

I was able to look for the assessment tool for the child development variables (the ECDI) but I wanted to know what were the specific questions that were asked (the 10 questions related to early child development) because I looked at the questionnaires again and I did not find anything related to child development. I also checked the recode manual (to get the variables codes) and the DHS guide, it is not mentioned there. I would like to know what are the variable codes for each question asked for the child development questions.
Thank you for your help!

Dear User, I have attached the MICS5 (ECD) module. These questions when they are asked are country/survey specific. This means they start with the letter "S" and correspond to the question in the questionnaire. For example: In Cambodia DHS 2014, the questions regarding this module begin with Q566. In the recode file it would be S566.
S567 consists of yes/no responses for 3 questions a) b) c) and coded as follow:
0 No
1 Yes
8 DK
9 Missing
blank Notappl

A country may choose to use all the questions or just some of the questions or add some of their own.
You will need to look at the questionnaires, .MAP file and frequencies for each of the countries in your analysis. You will also have available to you a Word file describing the data file. This document will also have a list of all the country/survey specific variables. All these files will be available to you when you download the data for the country / countries in your analysis.
To take a look at Cambodia DHS 2014 final report, you can access here. https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-FR312-DHS-Final-Repo rts.cfm
The questionnaires are in Appendix E

Hope this helps.
