I'm using HIV prevalence data for Uganda from the AIS 2011 HIV File and Contraception data from the DHS 2016 Individual Recode File. The Region Names are not matching up between these two datasets. The region names for the Contraception Data, from the 2016 Individual Recode File, are as follows:

0 = 'UG7 - Kampala'
1 = 'UG7 - Central1'
2 = 'UG7 - Central2'
3 = 'UG7 - Busoga' - Eastern
4 = 'UG7 - Bukedi' - Eastern
5 = 'UG7 - Bugishu' - Eastern
6 = 'UG7 - Teso' - Eastern
7 = 'UG7 - Karamoja' - Northern
8 = 'UG7 - Lango' - Northern
9 = 'UG7 - Acholi'- Northern
10 = 'UG7 - West Nile' - Northern
11 = 'UG7 - Bunyoro' - Western
12 = 'UG7 - Tooro' - Western
13 = 'UG7 - Ankole' - Western
14 = 'UG7 - Kigezi' - Western

However, in the HIV dataset from the AIS 2011 HIV File, the Region Names are as follows:

1= 'UG6 - Central 1'
2= 'UG6 - Central 2'
3= 'UG6 - Kampala'
4= 'UG6 - East Central'
5= 'UG6 - Mid Eastern'
6= 'UG6 - North East'
7= 'UG6 - West Nile'
8= 'UG6 - Mid Northern'
9= 'UG6 - South Western'
10='UG6 - Mid Western';

Is there a recode available to link the regions in each dataset?

The larger number of regions reported in the 2016 DHS IR file than in the 2011 AIS file mirrors the larger number of regions reported in the 2016 DHS survey than in the 2011 DHS survey for Uganda. The geographer who devotes some time to IPUMS-DHS will be reviewing this change starting next week, to come up with integrated geography covering 2011 and 2016 Ugandan data (which has to lose some of the detail from 2016 to get a common geographic footprint). I will post the recode information for consistent geographic regions in those two Ugandan datasets when we have worked this out. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

The regional division changed from one survey to the next and cannot exactly be recoded into one standard.
Specifically, AIS regions East Central, Mid Eastern, North East and Mid Northern stand on their own.

Thank you for your response Dr. King. I wanted to follow up to see if there are any updates on getting recoding instructions for consistent geographic regions? Do you have an estimate of when the geographer working on this will have a solution?

Thanks for your help!
Kyli
