Hi all,
I want to merge data from HR, IR, MR, KR, PR and HW datasets.

The official Recode Manual (Version VI) includes information about the first three datasets (HR, IR and MR) but no information for the other recodes. I didn't find any recode manual that included info about the other datasets.

Is there a document that inlcudes all variables and their descriptions and I just missed it? Where can I find it?

Thanks a lot!

Best,
Timo

All the variables in the recode datasets (HR IR MR BR PR KR CR) are described in the official Recode Manual.

The core questionnaires in DHS surveys are: the Household, Women's and Men's. These are recoded for the sake of consistency and comparability across surveys. The Individual Women's and Men's Recode files are initially created using a hierarchical model and later exported to SPSS, SAS and Stata datasets for the different analytical units of: household information, household member's information, women's information, children's information (of the interviewed women), and men's information. Further the children's information exists in two groups basic data for all children of a woman, and more in depth information for children born in the last five years. And then, were possible, individual men and women are matched into couples.

Hi Bridgette,

thanks for your answer. I didn't fully understand it though, so that I have some follow-up questions.

I understand that all variables ultimately come from IR, MR or HR. So would that mean that for example data about a child, whose mother does not live in the household, comes from HR and is thus included in HR and PR? Or is it then included only in PR?

But is there a list somewhere that shows which of the variables from the core questionnaires are included in which recode? And that shows the overlap between the recodes?

The official recode manual does describe all the variables, I understand now. But it does not show which variables go into which recode and overlaps between recodes.

Best
Timo

PS: I just checked again and there are variables in the PR dataset which are not explained in the official recode manual it seems. Examples are all "sh" variables from the PR dataset.

Still, I feel like I'm missing a list with all variables per recode.

Variable names that start with "S" are country-specific. The best source of information about them is the questionnaire, which is in an appendix at the end of every main report. These country specific variables are generally named and coded in the same way as they were on the questionnaire. The variable will have a leading "SH" if the question was asked at the household level, a leading "S" if asked at the women's level, and a leading "SM" if asked at the men's level.

We do not publish a standard listing of which variables are in each exported recode file. However, each zip has a ".MAP" file that gives a listing of the variables in that specific dataset. Also view the following page for additional information: https://www.dhsprogram.com/data/Dataset-Types.cfm
