I'm looking at height/age standard deviation but which variable do I use or do I somehow use all?

I believe you are using a re-code that has multiple children per "row" - so _1 is for the first kid, _2 is for the second, etc. You might want to just use the child recode which will have just "hw70" for each observation (because is that recode an observation is a child and not a household or woman).
