Caste name codes Standard DHS, 1992 [message #3325]

Hi,

In the 1992 household survey there is a variable (h035) labeled "which caste head hh belong?" There are 220 unique code values corresponding to this question. Is it possible to get the actual caste name? As in, which caste each code is associated with?

I was unable to find this in the Dictionary Report.

The list of caste codes can be found in a file called CasteCodes.pdf that is included in any of the IAIR23??.zip files.

Dear DHS-Expert
I could not open the casteCodes.pdf file as it shows up as an empty file. The exact error I get is "The file "CasteCodes (1).pdf" could not be opened because it is empty.". Ypu may upload it again for the benefit of the forum users.

2. I want to merge 'ctresponse' from the caste/tribe file to CR or IR file. How to go about it?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

The IR file for this survey (IAIR32FL.dta) and the KR file include a variable s148 that is the caste of the household head. This is given as a number. The numbers range from 1 to 7370, with special codes 0, 9996, 9997, 9998, and 9999. About 8% of the women have special codes and another 12% are completely missing on s148. The labels for these codes are apparently given by the pdf file (CasteCodes.pdf) that you already have. I believe that what you want to do is to attach those labels to s148. This would require converting the pdf file to a text file that could be read by Stata. It is possible that someone has already prepared such a text file, but we at DHS only have the pdf file. If you have the text file, I can describe how to use it to attach labels to s148.

In NFHS-4 data, as downloaded from DHS, I do not find the castetribe.dta file. This file was available in NFHS-3 when I downloaded.The caste/tribe information was collected in the household (question 35), women's (question 115) and men's (question 117) in NFHS-4. I could not find the variables concerning those questions. I would be grateful if you could help me.

Discussions are currently going on in India about when/how to release the caste/tribe data. Stay tuned. For your information, many users in the past have had a difficult time using the caste/tribe data from NFHS because there are so many different ways to spell the caste/tribe names in the file, so be prepared to spend a lot of time to decipher the caste/tribe names.

I have been waiting for the caste-tribe data for NFHS-4 for more than a year and in the middle of my research for a doctoral degree program. I would be grateful if the caste-tribe data is released at an early date. In case, it has been already released (though I couldn't find it in the data folder), kindly let me know.

To be approved to access the caste/tribe data from NFHS-4, you will need to request permission from the Director of the International Institute for Population Science in Mumbai (director@iips.net). If you receive permission, let us know so that we can release the file to you. However, even if you are granted permission, you will find the caste/tribe data very difficult to work with since the caste/tribe names were not coded in NFHS-4. Given all the different spellings of caste/tribe names, matching the castes/tribes with earlier NFHS surveys would be extremely difficult and time consuming.
